Five Inspirational Shows to Watch on Netflix During the Holidays

Google inspirational movies on Netflix or best documentaries on Netflix and you’ll get about 9 million results! During the holidays when families are bundled up with their snuggies and popcorn for feel-good movies, I wanted to share some options which might not cross your mind as family-friendly.

Each of these movies, documentaries, or episodes met these criteria:

  • Family-friendly (I’ll let you to decide what content is age-appropriate*)
  • Emotionally grabbed our hearts in the best feel-good way.
  • Educated, enlightened, and made us want to be better people.
  • Elevated us through witnessing persistence and creativity of the human spirit.

Five Inspirational Movies To Watch With Your Family

  1. My Next Guest David Letterman’s interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (I didn’t think I could admire President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine more…watch this with your kids. Will shift your perspective and increase your gratitude for life.)
  2. 14 Peaks – Nothing Is Impossible – Nimsdai Purja will leave you feeling like nothing is impossible! Stunning mountain-climbing footage in Nimsdai’s home country of Nepal and beyond.
  3. My Octopus Teacher – the extraordinary underwater journey and relationship with an octopus in South Africa.
  4. Miss Americana Taylor Swift – I almost didn’t even consider this because I assumed it would be a fluff piece. I was pleasantly surprised and left feeling inspired and admired this young woman’s talent and tenacity. This was a family choice to appease my teen and I was glad we added it to our family movie night!
  5. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind – if you enjoy foreign films with subtitles, this movie will reward you with a sweet triumph after an arduous struggle. It’s not a documentary but, is based on a true story set in Malawi, Africa. (If you don’t watch the movie, check out his story or read the book about 14 year-old William KamKwamba.)

Bonus: Hustle with Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah. This is not a documentary or based on a true story, but, it was still inspirational! I wanted to include another option in case a sports movie is the common denominator you need to agree on movie night! I wasn’t sure if I’d like this as this was my hubby’s pick (he pretty much always picks sports movies!) and I loved it! I got pulled into this basketball drama, the relationships and the resiliency to keep going. Don’t give up!

* is a great resource to check the appropriateness for your children.
