The Mindfulness of Creativity

One of the ways I relax and get into a meditative state of mind is being creative.  This holiday weekend that included decorating the house for Christmas.  This year I wanted to move our Christmas tree into our family room, which is where we spend most of our time.  I realized that we had put the window in the front window because that’s what we “should” do.

“If we put the Christmas tree in the family room, what will people see in the front of the house?  Do we need to get another tree?”

My fam considered it then I took a few breaths, connected to MY intuition, and realized I really didn’t care about following someone else’s expectations about holiday decor.  I chose what felt good, functional, and to me/us, what was aesthetically pleasing.

We picked our live Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and we decided to just give it a try and see how it looked/felt.  As soon as we placed the tree in the family room, it instantly felt like the right spot.  I had to figure out how to create a sense of balance since the placement was not asymmetric…and that was okay.  Life loves homeostasis, which applies even to decorating your house.  It was a fun challenge creating the space that was felt pleasing and balanced.

Pivot: Listening To Your Intuition

THEN…what to do about the front of the house?  We planned on getting an artificial tree then I thought “Why do I want to waste money and buy something that would create clutter or add to the landfill…someday?  And, create extra work for us?  Just to show that we have a tree in the front window?”  

As I discussed with my hubby he suggested “Maybe you can get an idea from pinterest.”  Duh, why didn’t I think of that?

I quickly saw what would work.  We had just dropped our college daughter off at the airport Sunday morning and I was motivated to go to Home Depot because I got a bee in my bonnet and was motivated to create and craft.  I didn’t exactly see this design on pinterest but, it was my affordable, resourceful option, mostly using what we already had.

Christmas Window Curtain Lights with Floating Ornaments

Materials:

• Command hooks for lights
• Home Depot curtain lights (10ft wide x 6ft high)
• fishing line (loop in different lengths)
• 6 ornaments – alternate colors & shapes
• metal ornament hooks
• painter’s tape

Instructions:

1. hang lights around window.
2. loop fishing line in alternate lengths (TIP: work with line against dark surface. double up the fishing line then double-tie the ends…twice).
3. hang fishing line on top light strand with ornament hook.
4. hang ornament at bottom of fishing line loop.
5. bend the top ornament hooks so half of the hook lays flat on window moulding.
6. secure top of metal hook with thin piece of painter’s tape to create a straight top light strand (not droopy)
