INTRO TO YOGA – 4 weekly sessions Feb 4-25, 2021

Are you or someone you know curious about yoga but, you don’t even know where to start, you might not even have a yoga mat or feel intimidated or lost? This series is for you!

Why am I offering this course? Years ago I heard my papa say “I should try that yoga thing sometime, not what YOU do, Amelia, but, yoga for people like me.” I laughed and suggested he look for a class at his local community center. I never thought to teach him myself, especially since we live far away. Fast-forward to “Covid-times” and, after about a year of connecting via facetime or family zoom calls, a light bulb went off “Why not teach to my parents, a custom class just for them, via zoom?” My cousin asked me to teach her dad, my uncle, beginner yoga then a friend asked if I would offer an introductory virtual class to take with her mother. So, I decided it was time to create this course for any and all of YOU!

The more the merrier! If you are reading this and have a family member or friend in mind, I recommend you join this beginner series WITH them! The gift of yoga is truly life-affirming and life-changing. Those of you who practice yoga, you know the benefits of yoga. Here’s an opportunity to share what you love with anyone, anywhere!

Book for yourself or a loved one for $40. Purchase it for two of you to participate together for $75!

Weekly Sessions: These 30 minute sessions will be offered Thursdays 6-630pm in an accessible, non-intimidating format:

  • Welcome and Check-ins
  • Weekly themes: Yoga as a life-skill
  • Breathwork
  • Mindfulness
  • Link Movement with Breath
  • Relaxation (while laying down in savasana)

How to Participate? Join this class in the comfort of your own home! Every week you’ll receive a zoom link via email (FYI same link every week.) Join the zoom class 5 minutes before class starts. Watch, listen, participate, and relax!

What equipment do I need? First class, just show up! I will briefly talk about yoga supplies (mat, block, strap.) If you have a yoga mat, great, have it ready. If not, no worries! Here is my request to set up before your first class:

  • Set up zoom. Reach out to a friend if zoom is new to you or check out this tutorial to learn how to set up zoom for the first time.
  • Position yourself and your camera so I can see you, head to toe.
  • Equipment: Yoga mat, towel or blanket on floor.
  • Optional: 2 yoga blocks, 1 yoga strap, 1 bolster/pillow.
  • Optional Chair: If you experience difficulty sitting on the floor or standing up from the floor, I recommend having a chair close by and for the final pose laying down on a bed or in a recliner.

That’s all you need! I will be available for questions and answers during the class and via email. When you book the class I will email you. Feel free to reach out with your yoga questions!

PRESENCE (week one) “40 Days to Personal Revolution” by Baron Baptiste

One of the best decisions I ever made in my life was embarking on my Baptiste yoga journey. And, one of the most impactful Baptiste programs and books is “40 Days to Personal Revolution – to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the Sacred Within Your Soul by Baron Baptiste.

I am on an amazing team of teachers leading this 40 Days program through Baptiste Power Yoga San Francisco and am offering support and commitment to the daily yoga and meditation practice by publishing weekly episodes aligned with the weekly theme and focus points.

Week One theme: PRESENCE.

And, the first two laws are:

  • Law One: Seek the Truth
  • Law Two: Be Willing to Come Apart

Here are the iTunes podcast links to a meditation and yoga class you can use during Week One of your 40 days program, or even if you’re not following the 40 days book! First preference is to get yourself to a class AND for times when that’s not possible, these episodes are for you! Creating a “no excuses!” option to support your commitment to a daily practice! Of course, remember one day of rest every week from yoga! Meditation every day, asana practice 6 days/week.

If you’re new to my podcast, there are other yoga, meditations, and guest interviews on my Spiritually Fit Yoga too! (My podcast is also on Spotify, Google podcast, Anchor, and more.)

Have you listened to my episodes? I’d appreciate a review an iTunes with your feedback (5 star ratings always appreciated) or comment below. My. intention is to offer you podcast episodes to empower you using the tools of yoga and meditation, and from the insight and wisdom offered by my guest interviews! Thank you for being here.

Peace out,

WEDNESDAY EVENING COMMUNITY MEDITATION & YOGA NIDRA 8:30-9:00pm AT JOYA YOGA SAN RAMON

2016-sunset-bigisland-easyp

“Create your seat. Close your eyes and focus on the sound of the opening bells.” That’s how I begin our new Wednesday evening meditation sessions, in a softly lit yoga studio, meditation is signaled by the Tibetan bells, then time to still your body, soothe your nerves, and calm your mind. The meditation practice invites you to slow down and allow the experience of presence and awakening. Physiologically, meditation can lower stress, lower your blood pressure, lower your cortisol levels, slow down your heart rate, and cultivate an overall sense of well-being and peace. Just thinking about it relaxes me!

This is a community donation-based meditation “sit” at Joya Yoga San Ramon and we welcome participants of any level of meditation.

Meditation begins promptly at 8:30 and ends at 9:00. This session follows a 7pm Yin Yoga class with me, which ends at 8:15pm so a quiet transition between classes is requested. Many of the yin yoga students will already be seated in meditation before the 8:30 session begins.

The Joya Yoga San Ramon doors will open by 8:10 and will be locked by 8:30pm. Please no late arrivals for the meditation sessions. Blankets and bolsters are available for your use during meditation.

The Joya Yoga San Ramon doors will open by 8:10 and will be locked by 8:30pm.  Please no late arrivals for the meditation sessions.  Blankets and bolsters are available for your use during meditation. Please arrive early and quietly take your seat. See you on your mats! Namaste.

SPIDER POSE…IS IT A “REAL YOGA” POSE?

IMG_0804Variations of Goddess Pose, utkata konasana, are sometimes called Spider Pose…but, is there a sanskrit name? I don’t know and to me it doesn’t matter. Does it feel good in my body? Does it invite strength, vitality, clarity, calm and connection to self? That’s what matters to me. It’s funny how yogis can sometimes get judgy, criticizing others because something is not “real yoga.” It makes me ask “Is criticism or judgment of others’ practices ‘real yoga’? Is it only yoga if it’s taught in sanskrit? Or if you chant or burn incense?

I know what works for me and I remind my students that ultimately each one of us is our own inner teacher. If you don’t agree with another’s practice, why not just lift them up by letting them be, and you do you? Words I need to hear myself to keep my judginess in check.

These words by Tara Brach often remind me to practice compassion. This is my intention for you when I teach and for everyone.
May all beings be free from harm.
May all beings be held in loving presence…
Filled with loving presence.
May all beings touch great and natural peace.
May all beings be free.

Namaste…

Inspired by Gabby Bernstein’s blog post titled “”Say This One Sentence to See the World Differently.”  Repeat this mantra ““The light in you is all I see” throughout your day to shift your perspective, rewire your brain, change your mood.

YOGA IS A WORK-IN AND A WORK-OUT

Yoga has made the most impact on my inner-life, in the way I experience life with ease, with less reactivity and more assuredness and connection to who I am.  Yoga and meditation taught me to cultivate a habit of being intentional…intentional about the energy I choose to breathe into each moment, into my relationships, into my thoughts, into everything.   Sure, I am grateful for the benefits of a strong, flexible, lean body resulting from years of a consistent practice AND the transformation I appreciate the most is the flexibility in my mind, softness in my heart, release of grasping and clenching onto habits and lies and stories which kept me stuck in an experience of sadness, depression, anxiety, and anger.  Even just remembering when I used to live in heightened fight or flight I had to take a breath of relief and gratitude.  It wasn’t that long ago that my life felt small and fake and forced.  What if you could live each moment as if you stretched yourself out fully, from the inside out, into your body,  into how you wish to express your highest self into this world, into how you want to play big?  My wish is that you to use the tools of yoga, meditation, breath, and awareness to habitually experience life with ease, to expand and shine as you impact your existence with the gifts and talents your highest self is urging you to share.  Go inward yogis and express out.  May you experience life with ease….and play big!  Namaste…
